D-Knox (Donnell Knox) returns to his own Sonic Mind label for the start of a new collaboration with Mark Hawkins, otherwise known as Marquis Hawkes.

Knox is a living legend who’s been making music for over 25 years since growing up in Michigan’s Kalamazoo (a city halfway between Detroit and Chicago). The man from Kalamazoo who now resides in Warsaw (Poland) has forged a career of intense quality, which began with releases on the likes of Jay Denham’s Black Nation and Elypsia before he launched his own Sonic Mind label in the mid-90s. For the uninitiated you can get to know this master better via his interview with Resident Advsisor for their HYPERLINK "https://www.residentadvisor.net/podcast-episode.aspx?exchange=398" RA Exchange.

Many will know the Marquis Hawkes name for his releases on labels like Dixon Avenue Basement Jams, Clone, Aus Music and Houndstooth. What may not be as well known are his origins in the UK, cutting his teeth DJing (whilst living as a New Age traveller) at illegal events in the mid-90s before launching as a producer under his real name, Mark Hawkins on the likes of Djax-Up-Beats.

Now living in Berlin, Hawkins was already a long-time D-Knox fan before they finally met in Warsaw more than ten years ago. They kept in touch and later began hanging out whenever Knox was in the German capital. Mark soon expressed to Donnell that it would be an honour to make music with him, and Donnell reciprocated, being particularly impressed with Mark’s production skills and focused work ethic.

The first of these collaborations is the mighty ‘Kalamazoo EP’, featuring 4 tracks of deliciously deep techno that matches old-school excellence with future-forward electronics.

Further collaborations for the Knox / Hawkins super-duo will surely follow.
